Day 1
Flights to Portland International Airport (PDX). Rent car. Trip to REI (two Portland locations) for any mountaineering boot rentals (see equipment list). Drive to Timberline Lodge at 6,000 feet (for information: www.timberlinelodge.com or 503-622-7979) on Mt. Hood, Oregon (about a 1.5-hour easy scenic drive). Overnight in lodge.
Day 2
Meet in the lobby of Timberline Lodge at 9 a.m. Head to the training area for a one-day climbing school. This gives us valuable practice with our equipment, a chance to make sure all systems (equipment) are go, and a chance to review and learn important safety and efficiency techniques. This school will end mid-afternoon. Descend to lodge, pack, early dinner, and early to bed. Overnight in lodge. |
Day 3
Summit day on Mt. Hood! Wake up call will come early depending on weather. Catch our Sno-Cat Shuttle outside of lodge. Shuttle to 8,500 feet at the top of Timberline Ski Area. Climb Mt. Hood! Descend to lodge. This should take 8 to10 hours round trip. You might wish to arrange for a late 2:00 p.m. checkout this day from the lodge. Depending on your flights home, you may wish to stay overnight at the lodge again. If you have flights before 10:00 a.m., we recommend late checkout and staying overnight in a Portland Airport hotel. There are plenty of these hotels and no reservations are necessary. Otherwise, stay at the lodge and enjoy it! Heated year round outdoor pool, hot tub.
Day 4
